JJerrold began with a coat I couldn't buy.

I've spent a lifetime in coats — the kind that finish an outfit, the kind strangers stop you on the street to ask about. The one I kept coming back to was long, unstructured, and reached the ankle. Every version I found cost more than a coat has any business costing.

So on a trip to Thailand, I had one made.

Then I couldn't walk a block without someone asking where it was from.

That's the whole beginning. Not a business plan — a coat I wanted, made properly, at a price that made sense.

Today we make two.

The Column Wrap is double-faced wool, cut to graze the ankle, with no buttons and no zip — worn open it falls like a long-line cardigan, wrapped and tied it reads as evening.

The Wool Alpaca Teddy is seventy percent wool and thirty percent alpaca, cut to mid-calf.

Neither has a synthetic fibre in the shell. In a category where the default is polyester, that was the first place we refused to save money. Timeless silhouettes in luxury materials, at a price that makes sense.

Alongside the coats, a small number of jackets — limited editions, two or three of a style at most.

A coat is the only thing you wear that people see before they see you. Get it right and you stop thinking about it — which is the entire point. It carries a morning of meetings and it carries whatever the night turns into, without changing, and without asking you to change either.
